Comic version of Romeo and Juliet

Comic version of Romeo And Juliet

In this project, our group is going to adapt comedy to the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet is really beautiful story and it's full of poetic lines, but we thought it will be extremely hilarious if we change some settings and how we act. Sarcasm will be the main literary feature of the new play. For example, the show, Saturday Night Live, performs serious and heavy plays hilariously by changing settings, how they act, and emphasizing some ironic situations. We will approach every lines in new perspective, so that modern audiences can forget about how beautiful the original story was. Approaching the story with totally new perspective and coming up with funny ideas of new settings will help us to think more critically and creatively.

We will perform the scene 1.5, 2.2 and 3.1. First, scene 1.5 is the first meeting of Romeo and Juliet. The most of their lines are so poetic and beautiful, and we have to stay in original language, so we will have hard time to compose a funny scene. However, Romeo is only 16 years old boy, so he wouldn't have that much experience at saying those beautiful words which also can sound hilarious to others. Scene 2.2 is the balcony scene which is one of the most beautiful scene. We are going to have slight change of settings like Juliet is actually staying at 35th floor of extremely high hotel or actually everything is happening through social media, so that we can add some hilarious sources by the things that can actually happen in modern days. Finally in the scene 3.1, the fight scene of Tybalt and Mercutio, they will act like really dumb. They've never actually killed someone before, and never even dreamed of it. Also we can add slow motion in the scene, so that we can emphasize exaggerated facial expressions.

We will need at least 2 people for the scene 1.5. Olivia will be Juliet and Ryan will be Romeo and we might put more people to express the crowded party. For the scene 2.2, we also need at least 2 people and to divide the lines evenly, we can change the actors from the first scene. Lastly, at least 3 people will be in the scene 3.1.
